The event, organized to honor the country’s armed forces, was also attended by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and other SLPP members.

In his speech, Mahinda Rajapaksa emphasized the importance of national duty and security. “We came today to fulfill a duty,” he said. “Yes, we fought for peace—not to capture anyone. We fought to protect the country.”

Reflecting on the end of the civil war in 2009 under his leadership, he added, “War is a tragedy. But our army won. In war, one side has to win. National security is not a question—we must protect the country.”

He also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the nation’s future approach to security. “Whether this will be done in the future is uncertain. That will be decided by the governments to come,” he remarked.

The commemoration comes as Sri Lanka marks the 15th anniversary of the end of the civil war, with ongoing debates about reconciliation, accountability, and national unity continuing to shape the political discourse.
