Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe announced that the first batch of imported salt, amounting to 30,000 metric tons, will arrive in the country this Wednesday. The consignment is intended exclusively for industrial use and will be distributed only to factories.
This move comes in response to a reported decline in local salt production caused by unseasonal rains. Salt manufacturing, which typically takes about seven months, has been disrupted, leading to reduced output.
In a related development, Minister Sunil Handunnetthi conducted an inspection visit to Puttalam Salt Limited, which is responsible for nearly 60 percent of Sri Lanka’s annual salt production. During the visit, officials acknowledged the challenges faced by the sector due to adverse weather conditions.
Authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining a stable salt supply to meet both industrial and domestic demand, highlighting that further assessments will be made to determine the need for additional imports in the coming months
