Parliament to Convene today (20) with Key Debates Scheduled

According to the Parliamentary Communications Department, today's session (May 20) will begin at 9:30 a.m. with parliamentary business under Standing Orders 22 (1) to (6), followed by an hour of oral questions from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., and questions under Standing Order 27(2) until 11:30 a.m.

 The rest of the day, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., has been allocated for the debate on an order under the Excise Duty (Special Provisions) Act. The day will conclude with a 30-minute debate on a motion to adjourn the House presented by the opposition.

The schedule for Tuesday, May 21, mirrors that of today in its structure until 11:30 a.m., after which Parliament will debate the Order under the Finance Act No. 25 of 2003 and the Notification under the Finance Act No. 35 of 2018 until 5:00 p.m. A brief adjournment debate is again scheduled from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

On May 22, Parliament will focus on 10 resolutions under the Import and Export (Control) Act and Section 8 of the Appropriation Act No. 34 of 2023, with debates running from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The sittings will conclude on May 23 with the second reading debate of the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill, marking a significant legislative focus on judicial reform.
