The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued early landslide warnings for multiple areas across six districts as continuous heavy rainfall heightens the risk of slope failures in vulnerable regions.

The warnings, which are classified as Level 1 (Yellow), will remain in effect until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (May 19), according to the NBRO. Affected areas include specific Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) and their surrounding regions in the districts of Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, and Ratnapura.

The areas under alert are as follows:

Colombo District: Seethawaka DSD and nearby areas

Galle District: Elpitiya DSD and nearby areas

Kalutara District: Palindanuwara and Ingiriya DSDs and surrounding areas

Kandy District: Pasbage Korale DSD and surrounding areas

Kegalle District: Bulathkohupitiya, Ruwanwella, Dehiowita, and Warakapola DSDs and nearby regions

Ratnapura District: Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, and Kuruwita DSDs and surrounding areas

The NBRO advises residents in these areas to remain vigilant for signs of potential landslides such as cracks on walls or the ground, tilting trees or utility poles, and unusual sounds from slopes. Residents are also urged to be prepared for possible evacuation if conditions worsen.

Authorities are closely monitoring rainfall levels and ground conditions and have mobilized local disaster response teams to assist in emergency situations.

For continued updates and safety instructions, residents are encouraged to follow official communication channels and heed instructions from local authorities.
