The one-day token strike launched by railway station masters was officially suspended at midnight yesterday (17), following widespread disruption and criticism.

The station masters initiated the strike to press several longstanding demands. However, the move drew sharp criticism from the Ministry of Transport, which labeled the action "unacceptable," especially as discussions were reportedly underway to address the union's concerns.

"The sudden strike severely inconvenienced thousands of passengers and disrupted public transport operations across the country," a Ministry spokesperson said. "It is deeply regrettable, especially at a time when the Ministry is actively engaging with trade unions."

Passengers at key railway stations across the country faced delays and cancellations throughout the day, with many left stranded due to the unexpected nature of the strike.

In a surprising turn, the strike was also condemned by other railway trade unions, who distanced themselves from the station masters’ action. Union representatives stated that while they support fair labor demands, unilateral decisions to halt services are counterproductive and harm public trust.

The Railway Station Masters’ Union has yet to announce its next steps, but indicated that it remains committed to seeking solutions through dialogue.
