The Department of Railways announced that all long-distance train services have been suspended today (17), as a result of a one-day token strike launched by railway station masters.
According to officials, train operations will be limited to short-distance routes including Galle, Negombo, and Veyangoda, in order to maintain essential services.
The strike, which began at midnight on May 16, was initiated by station masters in protest over several longstanding unresolved demands. The Railway Station Masters’ Union stated that despite repeated appeals, their concerns remain unaddressed, forcing them to take trade union action.
Passengers are advised to check with local stations for updates and make alternative travel arrangements where necessary.
