Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya took part in the 77th Al-Nakba commemoration ceremony held in Colombo yesterday, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s longstanding solidarity with the people of Palestine.
The event, themed "International Actions to End the Nakba and Achieve the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People," was held at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Institute of Agricultural Affairs and Research in Colombo 07. It was jointly organized by the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Solidarity Committee for the Remembrance of the Palestinian Catastrophe.
The ceremony marked the 77th anniversary of Al-Nakba, or “The Catastrophe,” which refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians in 1948. Religious leaders, diplomats, and political figures were present in a strong show of support for the Palestinian cause.
Notable attendees included Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and several heads of foreign embassies, alongside representatives from the Palestinian community in Sri Lanka.
The event featured speeches, cultural performances, and calls for renewed international efforts toward justice and peace for Palestine. Prime Minister Amarasuriya reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to advocating for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and an independent state.
