Two passengers were apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle 6.7 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately Rs. 210 million.
According to authorities, the suspects had ingeniously concealed the gold within vehicle spare parts in an attempt to avoid detection. They reportedly tried to pass through the airport’s “Red Channel,” a lane designated for businessmen carrying dutiable goods.
The suspects, aged 26 and 46, were arrested on the spot and later handed over to Sri Lanka Customs officers at the airport, along with the confiscated gold, for further investigation.
Customs officials are currently conducting inquiries to determine the origin of the smuggled gold and whether the suspects are connected to a larger smuggling network.
