The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory warning of widespread showers, thundershowers, and strong winds across many parts of Sri Lanka today.
Heavy Showers, Thunderstorms, and Strong Winds Expected Across Sri Lanka
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. Other areas of the island may also experience showers or thundershowers, particularly during the evening or night.
Some areas in the Central, Eastern, Uva, Northern, and North-central provinces may experience fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm. Meanwhile, fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph are expected over North-western, North-central, and Southern provinces.
The general public is advised to take precautions to mitigate the risks associated with strong winds and lightning, particularly during thundershowers.
Advisory for Sea Areas
Showers or thundershowers are forecast in sea areas around the island. Winds will be westerly to south-westerly, with speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph. However, wind speeds may increase up to 50–60 kmph in sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
These areas are expected to experience rough sea conditions, while other sea areas around the island will be moderate. Additionally, swell waves reaching 2.0–2.5 meters may occur off the coast from Kalutara to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota.
Fishermen and those engaged in maritime activities are urged to exercise caution due to the risk of temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
