Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake announced that all long-distance Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private buses will soon be outfitted with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered GPS and CCTV systems. This initiative aims to monitor driver behavior and prevent accidents on the island's roads.

The smart systems are designed to detect critical safety threats, including signs of driver fatigue, use of mobile phones while driving, and other forms of reckless behavior. According to the Ministry, these AI-based monitoring tools will provide real-time alerts and data, enabling authorities to intervene before incidents occur.

In addition, buses will be required to obtain an ER1 Certificate after undergoing full technical inspections before setting off on journeys. This measure ensures that vehicles are in optimal condition for travel, reducing the risk of mechanical failure on the road.

The government also plans to extend the use of AI safety systems to lorries and trains in the near future, signaling a broader commitment to transport safety.

This decision comes in the wake of the recent Kotmale bus tragedy, which resulted in the loss of 23 lives and prompted widespread calls for stronger safety regulations.

“We cannot afford to lose more lives due to negligence or preventable errors,” Minister Rathnayake stated. “This new technology will help us hold drivers accountable and ensure that public transport meets the highest safety standards.”

The Ministry of Transport expects full implementation of the AI systems within the next several months.
