London Buddhist Vihara marked Vesak day

The London Buddhist Vihara marked Buddha Day, also known as Vesak, with a special ceremony that also inaugurated the Vihara’s centenary celebrations. The event heralds the beginning of a series of commemorations leading up to the temple’s 100th anniversary in 2026.
Established in 1926, the London Buddhist Vihara holds the distinction of being the first Therav?da Buddhist temple established outside Asia. The Buddha Day observance drew a large gathering of devotees, community leaders, and guests who paid homage to the life and teachings of the Buddha.
The ceremony included traditional offerings, chanting, and Dhamma talks reflecting on the significance of Vesak, which celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. The Vihara’s resident monks also shared the vision for the centenary year, emphasizing its role in promoting peace, mindfulness, and interfaith harmony in the UK and beyond.
Chief Bhikkhu, Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thera, spoke of the Vihara’s historic legacy and its future: “For nearly a century, the Vihara has served as a spiritual and cultural bridge between East and West. As we approach our centenary, we renew our commitment to the Buddha’s timeless message of compassion and wisdom.”
The centenary celebrations will include a series of religious, cultural, and educational events throughout the year, culminating in 2026.
