His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, held an audience with the newly elected leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, following the conclusion of the Papal Conclave in Vatican City.

Cardinal Ranjith, a senior figure in the global Catholic hierarchy, was among the cardinals nominated as potential successors to the late Pope Francis. He was present in the Vatican as part of the College of Cardinals that gathered to elect the new pontiff.

In a statement issued by the Archdiocese of Colombo, it was confirmed that Cardinal Ranjith met privately with Pope Leo XIV, offering his congratulations and pledging continued support and unity with the Holy See.

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church as it transitions leadership following the passing of Pope Francis. Cardinal Ranjith’s participation in the conclave and his meeting with the new Pope underscore Sri Lanka’s continuing importance in the global Catholic community.
