In a statement marking Vesak Poya Day, the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter, Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayaka Thera, emphasized the importance of observing the festival with sincere devotion through the practice of the Buddha's teachings.
The Mahanayaka Thera called on Sri Lankan Buddhists to prioritize Prathipatti Pooja—acts of religious practice such as alms giving, meditation, and observing preceptsover material celebrations.
Shaping lifestyles according to the teachings of the Buddha will help people lead peaceful and prosperous lives,” he said. While acknowledging the tradition of Vesak decorations and offerings, he stressed that true observance lies in spiritual discipline and inner reflection.
Vesak, which commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha, is one of the most sacred days in the Buddhist calendar.
