The Department of Meteorology forecasts enhanced showery conditions in the Southwestern region of Sri Lanka from this evening, prompting warnings for both land and sea areas.

According to the latest weather advisory, several spells of showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are likely to develop in parts of the Central, Uva, and Eastern provinces after 1:00 p.m.

The Met Department has cautioned the public to remain vigilant, as temporary localized strong winds and lightning may occur during thundershowers. Winds of 30-40 kmph are anticipated in Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces.

Sea Area Alert

Mariners are also advised to exercise caution. Showers are expected in sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Winds in these areas will be westerly to south-westerly, with speeds of 30-40 kmph, potentially increasing to 50-55 kmph in the seas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Sea conditions will be rough at times in these areas, while other sea regions around the island will remain moderate. Temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas are expected during thundershowers.

The public and fishing communities are urged to take adequate safety measures to avoid any harm due to adverse weather conditions.
