The Sri Lanka Police has announced a special traffic plan in Colombo starting tomorrow (May 12) to accommodate the large crowds expected during the 2025 Vesak Festival. The traffic plan will be in effect across multiple Vesak zones from May 12 to 16, with several roads converted to one-way traffic and heavy vehicles restricted.

According to the Police Media Division, three major Vesak zones will be active in Colombo:

Bauddhaloka Vesak Zone (May 12–14), organized by the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress, will extend from the Prison Junction on Baseline Road through Borella Junction, D.S. Junction, Kanatte Roundabout, and Bauddhaloka Mawatha up to Bambalapitiya Junction.

Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone (May 12–16), jointly organized by the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple and the Prime Minister’s Office, will cover Kompanya Veediya Police Roundabout, Kumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha, James Pieris Mawatha, Pittala Junction, and Flower Road, including surrounding roads like Jinarthana Mawatha, Navam Mawatha, and Perahera Mawatha.

Braybrooke Place Vesak Zone (May 12–13) will also be part of the celebrations with anticipated high footfall.

To manage the large number of visitors, particularly around Galle Face Green, Colombo Fort, Port City, and Kollupitiya Junction, traffic in these areas will be restricted to one-way from 7:00 p.m. on May 12 and 13. Access will still be granted to residents and emergency or essential service vehicles.

However, container trucks and tipper lorries will not be allowed to enter these Vesak zones during the operating period. Roads will return to normal two-way traffic once congestion decreases.

In addition to the traffic measures, Sri Lanka Police will deploy enhanced security across all Vesak zones to ensure the safety of devotees and the smooth conduct of festivities.

The public is advised to plan travel accordingly and cooperate with authorities for a safe and peaceful Vesak celebration.
