A tragic bus accident at Gerandi Ella in Ramboda claimed the lives of 21 people this morning when a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus veered off the road and plunged down a precipice on the Nuwara Eliya Gampola main road, police confirmed.

The bus, which was operating on a route from Kataragama to Kurunegala via Nuwara Eliya, was carrying dozens of passengers when the accident occurred. According to initial reports, the cause of the accident is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway.

At least 35 other passengers sustained injuries and have been admitted to the Nuwara Eliya and Kotmale hospitals for treatment. Medical teams are working around the clock to provide care to the wounded.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of those who lost their lives, as efforts are ongoing to inform the families and confirm the identities.

Emergency responders, including police and rescue teams, were deployed promptly to the scene, which is known for its steep terrain and sharp bends.

This incident marks one of the most serious road accidents in the central highlands in recent years, raising renewed concerns about road safety in the region.
