A serious accident occurred this morning when a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus veered off the road and overturned into a ravine in the Garandiella area of Kotmale, along the Nuwara Eliya–Gampola main road.
The bus, which was en route from Kataragama to Kurunegala via Nuwara Eliya, was carrying numerous passengers when the incident took place. According to local sources, tragic accident claimed the lives of five individuals and around 35 individuals sustained injuries and were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Emergency response teams, including police and rescue personnel, arrived at the scene promptly to assist in rescue operations and manage traffic. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, and investigations are currently underway.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially on hilly and winding roads which are prone to such incidents.
