Sri Lanka gears up for 2569th state vesak festival

The Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs has announced that all preparations are complete for the 2569th State Vesak Festival, set to be one of the most spiritually significant and culturally vibrant celebrations in Sri Lanka’s religious calendar.
Vesak Week will officially be observed from May 10 to 16, with the main state ceremony scheduled to take place at the Nuwara Eliya International Buddhist Centre in the Nuwara Eliya District.
This year’s theme, “Bhajetha Mitthe Kalyane – Bhajetha Purisuttame” (Let us associate with noble friends of good qualities), underscores the value of virtuous companionship and encourages spiritual reflection and personal development.
Temples across the country are preparing a wide range of spiritually enriching programs, including sermons, meditation sessions, and devotional offerings. These observances are designed to deepen the public’s connection to the core teachings of the Buddha and promote inner peace.
In keeping with Vesak traditions, cities throughout Sri Lanka are also in the midst of constructing spectacular Vesak pandals (illuminated displays depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha), while hundreds of dansals (alms-giving stalls) are being set up by volunteers to offer free food and refreshments to the public, promoting generosity and community unity.
Officials expect the 2025 Vesak Festival to draw wide participation from across the island, uniting communities in a shared celebration of compassion, wisdom, and harmony key tenets of the Buddhist path.
