Radiation Detection Equipment Commissioned at Colombo Port

The United States and Sri Lanka just celebrated 20 years of port security cooperation with the launch of new radiation detection equipment at Colombo’s West Container Terminal.
Radiation detection equipment worth approximately $500,000 (Rs. 148 million) was commissioned at the Port of Colombo’s West Container Terminal.
This advanced technology, provided by the U.S. Department of Energy under the Megaports initiative, helps detect and prevent the movement of radioactive materials—keeping global supply chains secure and safeguarding critical transit hubs.
The system is designed to detect and alert authorities to the presence of radioactive materials, supporting Sri Lanka’s national port security regulations and strengthening global supply chain security.
Billions of dollars of U.S. inbound and outbound goods pass through the Port of Colombo annually.
