The Election Commission (EC) announced that it aims to conclude its post-election duties by informing political parties and independent groups that have secured more than 50% of seats in Local Government (LG) bodies to nominate their respective chairpersons and mayors by June 2.

The EC will also communicate the required number of female representatives to be appointed in accordance with representation guidelines.

The recent LG elections saw the National People’s Power (NPP) emerge as the dominant force, securing 3,921 seats and obtaining a majority in over 150 LG bodies. Despite this strong showing, the NPP managed to gain overall administrative control in only around 100 councils, highlighting the fragmented nature of local governance.

From the opposition, the main Parliamentary Opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), claimed 1,766 seats, while the former ruling party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), secured 742 seats. The United National Party (UNP) and the People’s Alliance won 379 and 300 seats respectively, while the Sarvajana Balaya managed to win 22 seats nationwide.

As political parties prepare to name their leadership for local bodies, the EC emphasized the importance of timely compliance with regulations, especially regarding gender representation, to ensure smooth transitions and effective governance at the local level.
