NPP Leads Colombo Municipal Council Polls with 48 Seats

The National People’s Power (NPP) has emerged as the leading party in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) elections, securing 48 seats after polling 81,814 votes—equivalent to 36.92% of the total vote. Despite this strong performance, the NPP has fallen short of securing an outright majority in the 119-member council.
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) followed with 58,375 votes and 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) claimed 13 seats with 26,297 votes. The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) won 5 and 4 seats, respectively.
Several smaller parties and independent groups also secured representation:
Independent Group 03 – 3 seats
Independent Group 05 – 2 seats
United Peace Alliance – 2 seats
Sarvajana Balaya (SB) – 2 seats
Independent Group 04 – 2 seats
People’s Alliance, National Freedom Front, United Republican Front, and four other minor groups each secured 1 seat.
The election outcome marks a significant shift in Colombo's political landscape, with no single party claiming overall control. Coalition-building and negotiations are expected in the coming days as parties seek to form a functioning administration in the island’s largest and most financially significant local authority.
