A significant political shift appears to be taking shape across several local authorities as opposition parties have collectively outpaced the ruling National People's Power (NPP) in key councils, raising the possibility of unified opposition control.

According to Opposition Member of Parliament Mujibur Rahman, the combined strength of opposition parties has surpassed that of the NPP in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), one of the country’s most influential local bodies.

“This is a clear indication that the NPP no longer commands the majority at the local level in Colombo. If opposition parties work together, we can effectively block the NPP from controlling the CMC and other councils,” Rahman said.

The development comes amid growing discontent over the NPP’s governance and has sparked discussions among opposition leaders about forming strategic alliances to assert greater influence in local administrations.

Political analysts note that while no single opposition party holds a majority, their collective numbers represent a powerful check on the ruling party’s local ambitions. Unity among these parties could significantly alter the balance of power in local governance, especially in urban centers like Colombo.

As local council sessions reconvene, all eyes will be on whether the opposition can translate its numerical advantage into cohesive action.
