UGC summons state university Vice Chancellors

According to Professor Senavirathne, the meeting is scheduled to take place later this week and will focus on the escalating concerns surrounding ragging (hazing) within university campuses, among other critical topics.
The recurrence of ragging incidents has become a matter of national concern, and urgent steps are necessary to ensure the safety and dignity of all students," said Professor Senavirathne. He emphasized that the UGC is determined to implement stringent measures to curb such behavior and hold accountable those responsible.
The meeting comes in the wake of several recent cases of severe ragging reported from different universities, reigniting public and media outcry over the long-standing issue.
University administrators, student unions, and civil society groups have called for immediate reforms and stronger enforcement of anti-ragging laws. The UGC is expected to propose new strategies and strengthen existing policies to protect students and promote a healthy academic environment.
Mean while Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka has suspended 11 students following the tragic death of a fellow student, allegedly due to ragging, police reported. Among those suspended are four third-year students who were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the student's death.
