A group of 15 Sri Lankan nationals stranded in Meawaddy, Myanmar, are set to be rescued and repatriated on May 6, 2025, in a mission coordinated under the direct instructions of Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Myanmar has taken swift action, dispatching an official to Mae Sot, Thailand, today to oversee the final stages of the rescue operation. This initiative is being carried out in close collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Thailand, which is providing full logistical support, including air tickets and local transportation for the stranded individuals.

The rescue effort has been meticulously organized through diplomatic channels, with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs working closely with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Governor of Tak Province, and Thai Immigration authorities to ensure a smooth and safe operation.

The group is expected to be transported from the Myanmar border town of Meawaddy to Mae Sot, Thailand, before being flown back to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan authorities have expressed gratitude to the Thai government and IOM Thailand for their swift and compassionate support in facilitating the rescue mission
