The Department of Railways has announced that it will investigate a reported water leak at the iconic Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, following heavy rainfall in the area.

According to reports aired by local broadcast media on May 4, railway linesmen observed signs of a water leak emerging from the bridge structure, prompting concerns over its integrity. Although the Department of Railways has not yet received an official complaint, General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara confirmed that the matter would be taken seriously.

“We have not received a formal report as of now, but we will immediately look into the matter and take necessary action,” Jayasundara said, adding that the department will also review nearby construction activities for potential violations and pursue legal measures against unauthorized developments.

The Nine Arch Bridge, constructed in 1921 between Ella and Demodara railway stations, stands as a marvel of colonial-era engineering. Surrounded by lush greenery, it is a major tourist attraction for both Sri Lankan and international visitors. In recent years, the area has experienced a boom in tourism, with increased development around the historic structure.
