Sri Lanka set to hold 2025 LG elections tomorrow(06)

The transportation of ballot boxes to polling stations began early this morning, with the support of security personnel and election officials. A total of 17,156,338 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in this highly anticipated democratic exercise.
Campaigning officially ended at midnight on May 3, marking the start of the mandatory silence period, which will continue until the end of the election day on May 6. The Election Commission has strictly warned that legal action will be taken against any candidate or political party found violating campaign rules during this period, regardless of rank or position.
Commissioner Ratnayake also emphasized that possession of unauthorized ballot papers is strictly prohibited, and offenders will face strict legal consequences. Police have been instructed to remove any illegal campaign materials such as posters, banners, or cutouts found during the silence period.
A total of 75,589 candidates from recognized political parties and independent groups are contesting in this year’s elections. To ensure a safe and fair process, over 65,000 police officers have been deployed across the island, while the PAFFREL election monitoring group has mobilized nearly 3,000 observers.
Special arrangements have also been made to facilitate voting for individuals with disabilities or special needs.
