Showers and thundershowers expected across several districts

The public is urged to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning, particularly during thundershowers.

 The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for several parts of the island, forecasting showers or thundershowers in Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Polonnaruwa districts after 1:00 p.m. today.

Fairly heavy rainfall, exceeding 50 mm, is likely in some of these areas.

Elsewhere in the country, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur during the afternoon or night. Morning showers are also expected in the Western province and in the districts of Mannar, Puttalam, Galle, and Matara.

Additionally, misty conditions are expected in parts of the Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts during the morning hours.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather reports and remain cautious while traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.

Marine Weather Forecast for the Next 24 Hours – Issued at 5:30 AM, May 5, 2025

The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather alert for sea areas around the island over the next 24 hours.

Rainfall:

Showers or thundershowers are expected in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Mannar to Hambantota via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle. A few showers may also occur in other surrounding sea areas, especially during the afternoon or night.

Winds:

South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds between 25 and 35 kmph. Wind speeds may increase up to 45 kmph at times, particularly in the sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Sea Conditions:

Sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai and from Matara to Pottuvil are expected to be fairly rough at times. Other areas around the island will experience slight to moderate sea conditions.

Mariners are advised to exercise caution, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
