This zone, where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, is expected to bring widespread showers and thundershowers to several parts of the island.
According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers are likely in many areas, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy rainfall, exceeding 50 mm, is expected in some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Uva Province and Ampara District.
Showers or thundershowers are also possible in other parts of the island during the afternoon or night, with a chance of early morning rain in parts of the Western Province and the Galle and Matara districts.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers.
Additionally, misty conditions are expected in the morning in certain areas of the Central and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and take adequate safety measures during this period of unstable weather.
Weather Forecast for Sea Areas Around Sri Lanka – Next 24 Hours
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory for sea areas surrounding the island, warning of showers and strong winds over the next 24 hours.
Rainfall:
Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. A few showers are also likely in other coastal waters during the afternoon or night.
Winds:
Winds will be south-westerly at speeds of 25–35 kmph. However, gusts may increase up to 45 kmph, particularly in the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Sea Conditions:
These areas may experience fairly rough seas at times, while other surrounding sea regions are expected to be slight to moderate. Mariners are advised to remain cautious as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers.
Fishermen and naval personnel are advised to take appropriate precautions.
