Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today publicly disclosed that a number of former local government members received millions of rupees in questionable compensation claims following the 2022 protests. Speaking at a National People's Power (NPP) rally in Horana, the Minister revealed that 92 former members of Pradeshiya Sabhas and Urban Councils were collectively granted Rs. 620 million as compensation for alleged damage to their homes.

According to Dr. Jayatissa, these individuals claimed their properties were destroyed during the violent unrest that broke out across the country in May 2022. However, he accused them of exploiting the situation to obtain undue financial benefits.

The rally, which was attended by NPP local government candidates and supporters, served as a platform for the Minister to denounce what he described as rampant corruption within the former administration and its allies.

Dr. Jayatissa, who also serves as the Chief Organizing Minister of the Government Party, had previously presented a list of Members of Parliament who received similar compensation to Parliament on February 6. That list detailed payments made for property damage caused by arson during the May 9, 2022 protests.

“This is a clear misuse of public funds,” Dr. Jayatissa stated at the rally. “While ordinary citizens suffered and received little to no assistance, these officials enriched themselves under the guise of victimhood.”

The Minister called for a full investigation into the compensation scheme and urged authorities to recover the funds obtained through fraudulent claims.

The revelations come amid growing public demand for transparency and accountability from political leaders and former government officials.
