“In the past, we observed May Day as a day of struggle—against rape, corruption, fraud, injustice, violence, and state suppression,” Amarasuriya said. “But this year, we participate as members of a democratic government that was established through the genuine will of the people. That is why I feel this is, in a sense, a real May Day celebration.”

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya marked this year’s May Day celebrations with a powerful message reflecting the shift in the country’s political landscape. Addressing the crowds gathered at the Galle Face Green rally in Colombo, she emphasized the transformation from protest to governance, stating that for the first time in years, May Day felt like a “real celebration.”

Thousands attended the rally, held at Colombo’s iconic Galle Face Green, to show solidarity with workers and celebrate the achievements of a government they believe represents a historic people's victory.

The Prime Minister’s remarks highlighted the contrast between previous years—when opposition parties and activists used the occasion to challenge systemic injustice—and the current political climate, which she described as one of “hope, accountability, and democratic renewal.”

The rally featured speeches from trade union leaders, youth representatives, and government officials, all underscoring a shared commitment to workers’ rights and democratic governance.
