Deshabandu Tennakoon seeks security amid death threats

Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has requested police protection, citing threats to his life allegedly made by underworld figure Kanjipani Imran. Tennakoon submitted a written request to Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya on Thursday, following reports of the death threat.
The request comes after Tennakoon’s personal security detail was reportedly withdrawn due to his two-week evasion of arrest linked to a recent shooting incident.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that any formal request will be reviewed, with a threat assessment to determine the credibility of the danger. Police stated that if a credible threat is confirmed, security measures will be reinstated.
