May day 2025 : Where main political parties is rallying today

 National People’s Power (NPP) led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake made a historic return to Galle Face Green, the iconic protest site in Colombo, after previous bans on political gatherings were lifted. The rally drew significant crowds, marking a symbolic assertion of the party’s grassroots strength.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) hosted its May Day rally at the Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre in Nugegoda at 2:00 PM. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa made an appearance, emphasizing the party’s continuing influence within nationalist circles.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) took a more reflective tone with a commemorative event at its Darley Road headquarters, honoring former leader T.B. Ilangaratne. Party members and trade unionists laid floral tributes, focusing on the party’s historical contributions to labor rights.

In the hill country, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, rallied approximately 50,000 supporters in Talawakelle, highlighting plantation worker issues and calling for greater wage reforms.

The Sarvajana Balaya or People’s Power Party, led by MP Dilith Jayaweera, conducted a rally under the theme “Workers Towards Entrepreneurship” at the Warakapola fair grounds at 10:30 AM, pushing a reformist and economically liberal agenda.

The Frontline Socialist Party gathered supporters at the Lalith Athulathmudali Grounds in Kirulapone, emphasizing anti-capitalist and pro-worker policies.

Other notable gatherings were observed at traditional venues such as Hyde Park, Viharamahadevi Park, Armour Street, Keselwatta, the Colombo Municipal Council premises, P.D. Sirisena Stadium, Kosgashandiya, and the Postal Head Office, reflecting widespread participation across political and social spectrums.

This year’s May Day rallies come at a time of economic recovery, rising political competition, and growing calls for systemic reforms. With a mix of celebration, remembrance, and advocacy, the day reaffirmed the continuing significance of workers' rights in Sri Lanka’s evolving political narrative.
