Former President Maithripala Sirisena has paid the Rs. 1 million compensation ordered by the Supreme Court in connection with his controversial decision to grant a presidential pardon to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, who was convicted in the infamous Royal Park murder case.

The case was taken up today before a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices S. Thurairajah, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Janak de Silva. Sirisena was present in court during the proceedings.

President’s Counsel Faizer Musthapha, appearing for the former President, informed the court that the full compensation amount had been paid as directed by the Court.

Following the confirmation of payment, the Supreme Court ordered that Sirisena be released from any further proceedings related to the case.

The controversial pardon, granted in 2019, sparked widespread public outrage and criticism, leading to legal challenges over its legality and justification. The Supreme Court’s ruling and compensation order came as part of a broader accountability process regarding the use of presidential powers.
