Former President Maithripala Sirisena appeared before the Supreme Court today (29), following an order issued in connection with a Fundamental Rights petition related to the Royal Park murder case

The court order was issued in regard to a petition seeking the release of the individual sentenced to death in the high-profile 2005 murder case, which shocked the nation. The petitioner is challenging the legality and fairness of the continued imprisonment of the convict, citing alleged violations of fundamental rights.

Former President Sirisena’s appearance is linked to his previous role in considering clemency requests during his tenure. The Supreme Court summoned him to provide clarification and context regarding decisions made at the time in relation to this case.

Security was tightened around the court premises ahead of the high-profile hearing, which drew media attention and public interest due to its sensitive nature and the involvement of a former Head of State.

Further proceedings in the case are scheduled to continue, with the court set to deliberate on the legal grounds of the petition and any potential implications for executive decisions on pardons.
