Authorities have urged the general public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to reduce risks associated with temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which may occur during thundershowers.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory forecasting widespread showers and thundershowers across most parts of the island after 1:00 p.m. today.
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is expected in localized areas, particularly within the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Eastern, and Northern provinces. Morning showers are also likely in parts of the Western Province and the districts of Galle, Matara, and Puttalam.
In addition, misty conditions are expected during the morning hours in several regions, including the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara district.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to reduced visibility in misty areas and slippery roads caused by rain.
Weather Alert: Showers and Strong Winds Expected Around Island’s Sea Areas
The Department of Meteorology warns of showers or thundershowers in several sea areas around Sri Lanka over the next 24 hours. Coastal waters from Puttalam to Matara, via Colombo and Galle, are likely to experience widespread showers. A few showers are also expected in other marine areas, particularly during the evening or night.
Winds will be mainly Westerly or South-westerly, with speeds ranging between 25–35 kmph. However, stronger winds reaching up to 45 kmph are forecast in sea areas from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
These regions may also face fairly rough sea conditions, while the rest of the island’s surrounding waters will remain slight to moderate. Mariners and fishing communities are advised to be cautious, as thundershowers could bring temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas.
