The government has decided to extend the school stationery allowance to students in 6,576 schools with fewer than 300 students, as well as children in Child Development Centers and both lay and monastic students in all "Pirivenas."

This support will include students who are not part of the “Aswesuma” welfare program.

Announcing the decision today ( January 7), Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that each eligible student will receive Rs. 6,000 for school stationery, a benefit already provided to children from “Aswesuma” beneficiary families.

The Ministry of Education has been tasked with distributing this allowance to children from orphanages, families with disabled parents, and those facing special hardships. Due to the lack of an up-to-date database to identify such children, the Cabinet approved the proposal by the Prime Minister to ensure the allowance is distributed at the start of the 2025 school term.
