The board of duty (Rajakari Mandalaya) at the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya initiated a strike yesterday (January 5), halting sacred pooja and rituals.
The protest is against the appointment of S.V. Chandrasinghe as the acting Basnayake Nilame, a move they claim violates long-standing traditions and was influenced by political motives.
The appointment, made by the Commissioner for Buddhist Affairs, is meant to temporarily fill the position following the expiration of the previous Basnayake Nilame’s term. However, temple officials argue that the decision disregards established customs and allege Chandrasinghe’s close association with the current government.
In response, the officials staged a silent protest at the temple’s entrance, demanding a resolution that respects their traditions.
