The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, has announced that the first parliamentary session of the new year will take place from January 7 to January 10, 2025.

The schedule was finalized during the Committee on Parliamentary Business meeting, chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

On Tuesday, January 7, the session will begin with Questions for Oral Answers from 9:30 AM  to 10:30 AM This will be followed by an Adjournment Debate on the “Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report – 2024,” which will continue until 5:30 PM.

On second day, Wednesday, January 8, time has been allocated for Questions to the Prime Minister from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by Questions for Oral Answers until 10:30 AM.

Key legislative debates on regulations and orders under various acts, including the Imports and Exports (Control) Act, Foreign Exchange Act, Regulations under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, Regulation under the Casino Business (Regulation) Act, Order under the Ports and Airports Development Levy Act and Regulations under the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act will run from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM, the day will conclude with Questions at Adjournment Time from 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

On third day, Thursday, January 9, Questions for Oral Answers will be addressed from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by debates on the Sri Lanka Export Development Act, Special Commodity Levy Act, and Welfare Benefits Act until 11:30 AM, An Adjournment Debate led by the Opposition will run from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

On final day, Friday, January 10, Whole day  has been dedicated to Votes of Condolence for late Members of Parliament Kumara Welgama, H. Nandasena, and Tudor Gunasekera.

This first session of 2025 will address few of key fiscal and legislative matters which decide the country’s economic structure.
