The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has proposed a major project to enhance conservation at Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and boost its tourism appeal.
The initiative, supervised by Sri Lanka’s Central Cultural Fund and approved by the Department of Archaeology, includes upgrading the access road to Sigiriya Lion Rock, building an alternative route, and improving facilities like the Sigiriya Museum, restaurant, and ticket counter.
The project is estimated to cost Rs. 2.4 billion. To formalize the plan, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be signed between KOICA and the Central Cultural Fund, as directed by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs.
A meeting to discuss the project was held on December 27 at the Ministry, chaired by Deputy Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs, Prof. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi. KOICA’s Country Director Yongjin Kim, Deputy Country Director Yong Wan Kim, Ministry Secretary A.M.P.M.B. Atapattu, and Central Cultural Fund Director General Dr. Nilan Cooray were also attended the gathering.
