The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has launched an inquiry into nearly 6,000 vehicles fraudulently registered with the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT). These vehicles were reportedly imported illegally without paying the required customs duties owed to the government.

The commission has seized the vehicles for investigation and handed them over to Sri Lanka Customs for further inquiries, including determining unpaid customs duties and other applicable fees. Legal action is now underway regarding the identified vehicles.

CIABOC noted that the fraudulent registrations have caused significant issues for buyers, especially when transferring ownership. To address this, Sri Lanka Customs has introduced an online portal that allows individuals to check if a vehicle has been legally imported and if the necessary customs duties have been paid.

The public can now verify the legal status of vehicles they own or plan to purchase using the online portal provided by Sri Lanka Customs.
