Indian Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa in Colombo today, underscoring the longstanding ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, Opposition Leader Premadasa conveyed his appreciation for India's continued support and assistance to Sri Lanka, highlighting the deep-rooted friendship that spans centuries and emphasizing its importance in maintaining regional stability.
Premadasa assured Dr. Jaishankar that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya would uphold and strengthen the bilateral relationship with India if it were to assume governance. He specifically acknowledged India's contributions to vital sectors such as housing projects and the Suwa Seriya ambulance service, which have significantly benefited Sri Lankans across the country.
The Opposition Leader also commended India's progressive education policies and expressed his intent to introduce a smart education policy in Sri Lanka that aligns with contemporary global demands.
In a gesture of goodwill, Premadasa extended congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his reappointment, reflecting the mutual respect between the two leaders.
Dr. Jaishankar, on behalf of Prime Minister Modi, expressed satisfaction with Opposition Leader Premadasa's efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and reiterated India's steadfast commitment to enhancing ties with Sri Lanka. He emphasized India's eagerness to further nurture and expand this enduring partnership.
The meeting was attended by prominent parliamentarians including Prof. G. L. Peiris, Eran Wickramaratne, Palani Thigamparam, Rauff Hakeem, Niroshan Perera, and V. Radhakrishnan, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and Samagi Jana Alliance.
