Sri Lanka's official reserve assets recorded a marginal decrease of 0.9%, declining to USD 5.42 billion in May 2024 from USD 5.47 billion in April 2024, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
Despite the overall drop, the reserve assets figure includes proceeds from a currency swap with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), equivalent to approximately USD 1.4 billion. However, these funds are subject to specific conditions on their usability.
The slight decrease in reserves highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining foreign currency reserves amidst the country's broader economic struggles. The inclusion of the PBoC swap indicates reliance on external financial arrangements to bolster reserves, though the conditionalities attached to these funds may limit their immediate utility for broader economic needs.
