The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has expressed strong disapproval toward the Independent Television Network (ITN) regarding the organization of a proposed debate between two prominent opposition parties. In a letter addressed to the state broadcaster, SJB Member of Parliament Nalin Bandara outlined his party’s concerns and objections.

MP Bandara clarified that his invitation to the National People’s Power (NPP) was specifically for a debate between the economic councils of the two parties. However, ITN allegedly accepted a date proposed by the NPP without considering the planning and discussions initially suggested by the SJB.

The SJB insists that the debate should be conducted in a public venue, ensuring coverage by all broadcast and print media outlets, rather than being limited to a television studio.

This statement from the SJB follows reports earlier in the day that NPP leader MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake had informed ITN of his readiness to engage in a debate with SJB leader MP Sajith Premadasa. NPP Executive Committee member Nalinda Jayatissa, responsible for negotiating the terms of the debate, acknowledged receiving ITN’s offer to facilitate the debate on Thursday, June 6.

In his communication with the ITN chairman, Jayatissa emphasized the importance of confirming MP Premadasa's participation, highlighting that this is intended to be a public debate, not just a standard television debate.
