The Sri Lankan Parliament extended its congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his party's victory in the recent South Asian elections, concluded on Tuesday.
Both the government and the opposition emphasized Sri Lanka's dedication to maintaining a strong partnership with its neighboring country.
In a special statement to Parliament, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena expressed optimism about continuing the long-standing bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and India, rooted in shared beliefs and principles. "Sri Lanka looks forward to continuing its long-standing bilateral ties on shared beliefs and principles," Gunawardena stated.
He further highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing regional and global challenges. "As a close South Asian neighbor, Sri Lanka will work with India to overcome challenges and explore opportunities that arise in the current international situation," Gunawardena added.
Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa also assured Parliament of Sri Lanka's support for India. In a significant gesture, Premadasa proposed that the House advocate for India's permanent membership in the UN Security Council. "We are confident that all 225 members of the Sri Lankan Parliament will back this move," he asserted.
The unified stance of both the government and the opposition underscores Sri Lanka's commitment to fostering strong ties with India and collaborating on international platforms.
