The Welfare Benefits Board has refuted recent social media reports alleging the termination of the elderly allowance due to the implementation of the Aswesuma Welfare Scheme.
According to the President’s Media Division, Rs. 1,518 million has been allocated to district secretariats for this allowance in May 2024.
While the Board acknowledged delays in payments caused by technical issues, it assured that the allowance for the elderly will be distributed through the respective Divisional Secretariats starting from the second week of June under the usual system.
Furthermore, the June stipend is expected to be paid within the same month.
To streamline the process, the Board is making arrangements to credit the allowance directly to the relevant bank accounts through a secure payment system. This allowance is available to all individuals over 70 years of age in families currently receiving pensions.
