Plantations that fail to comply with the newly stipulated minimum wage of Rs. 1700 for workers will be reacquired by the government, announced Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara during an event held on Sunday.
The Minister emphasized that all plantation employers must implement the government’s decision to raise workers' wages starting next month. He noted that while tea smallholders are already paying their workers above the minimum wage, the issue persists with local plantation companies that were privatized after being transferred from the government.
Minister Nanayakkara highlighted that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the Cabinet to draft a bill to reclaim estates that do not comply with the minimum wage regulation.
