The former Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kalpitiya Police Station, who stands accused of sexually assaulting a female police constable, has been remanded until March 12 by the Puttalam Magistrate's Court.
According to police, the suspect was remanded in accordance with the provisions of the Victims Protection Act, due to allegations of threatening and influencing the complainant.
The former OIC had previously been interdicted from service by the National Police Commission in light of the allegations.
Following the alleged incident, the Kuliyapitiya Division Senior Superintendent of Police initiated an investigation and subsequently brought the matter to the attention of the courts.
Earlier, the Puttalam Magistrate's Court had granted bail to the suspect. However, during the recent court proceedings, the suspect was remanded once again, this time for allegedly threatening the female constable in an attempt to coerce her into withdrawing the complaint.
