The Sri Lanka Air Force has established a new CCTV monitoring operations centre at the Pettah Bus Stand in Colombo to enhance public safety and security.
The new facility, introduced as part of the modernization of the bus stand under the “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, operates a CCTV surveillance system around the clock, according to the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The effectiveness of the new system was demonstrated on August 23, when Air Force personnel monitoring the CCTV cameras detected a suspect allegedly stealing a passenger’s bag.
The Air Force personnel immediately identified the suspect, apprehended him, and handed him over to the Sri Lanka Police for further action.
According to the Air Force, the operations centre is not limited to preventing theft. It will also enable rapid responses when passengers fall ill, are involved in accidents, or face other emergencies at the bus stand.
The new surveillance system is expected to contribute to creating a safer public transportation environment and further strengthen security in public places.
