Two spill gates at the Victoria Reservoir opened automatically at around 8.00 p.m. today (27), as water levels reached the reservoir’s maximum capacity due to prevailing adverse weather conditions.
Reservoir Engineer stated that each spill gate is releasing 75 cubic metres of water per second.
Accordingly, a total of 150 cubic metres of water per second is being discharged into the Mahaweli River through the two spill gates.
The released water is expected to flow downstream along the Mahaweli River towards the Randenigala Reservoir.
Authorities have urged residents in the lower reaches of the Mahaweli River to remain vigilant about rising water levels and exercise extra caution when using the river.
