A man convicted of stealing 20 coconuts and fined Rs. 5000 and spent three years in jail for failing to pay the fine was released when Kalutara Prison Welfare Society settled the payment for the same.

The prisoner M. H. Wasantha was a resident of Matugama area who had been destined to spend three years in jail for want of Rs. 5000 to pay the fine for stealing the 20 coconuts from a land belonging to another.

Prison Superintendent Rohana Glappatthi, Deputy Chief Jailor Ruwan Gamini, Rehabilitation Officer Gayan Lakshitha were present when the prisoner was released.
